Timeline of Village History 1785 - 2020The history of the Town of Pendleton, South Carolina begins with the people who first acquired land in the area when the former Indian territories in the northwest corner of the state of South Carolina were open for settlement in 1784. Pendleton County was established in 1789, and the village of Pendleton was founded as its courthouse town in 1790. It then became the courthouse town for Pendleton District when it was established in 1800. During the early 19th century, Pendleton and the surrounding area became the home or summer residence of many of South Carolina's most prominent families. Pendleton is one of the oldest towns in the SC Upcountry, and today the town of Pendleton is unique as one of the few small towns in South Carolina to survive the ravages of time and progress with a nearly intact town square and many of its early structures.
